Jennifer Lopez buys Hamptons House with Landscape Potential

jennifer-lopez-buys-in-the-hamptons-5"Is there a landscape designer in the house?" After looking at photos of the $10 million house Jennifer Lopez just purchased in the Hamptons, I can't help but ask that question. The address of the 8,500-square-foot house is Bay Lane in Water Mill and there are a number of photos posted by the real estate listing company, Corcoran, on Trulia. One aerial photo of the property displays the large back yard. It's difficult not to see this as the blank and flat, used-to-be-a-potato-field look. A creative landscape design could offer assistance with regard to what has become a fairly common gambreled Hamptons McMansion architectural look.

Forbes Magazine has been following the exploits of this Hollywood high flyer and in 2012 named her "the world's most powerful celebrity" after a reported

5 Life Lessons from 35-year-old Hamptons Espalier Apple Trees

May 13, 2013 Experiencing NatureFeature ArticlesHamptonsPlant Care  No comments

Espalier-apples-959x414pxA quote considered to be one of the best Saturday Night Live quotes is a “Deep Thoughts” quote by Jack Handey about trees: “If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.” Very funny. It has been scientifically proven that certain trees inspire deep thoughts. Every year 33,000 people go to visit the 400-year-old apple tree in England that helped inspire Sir Isaac Newton to pen his theory of gravitational force. People are inspired by deep thoughts. But there's no chance that any of the 33,000 guests will be able to experience nature in quite the same way Newton did because the tree is now fenced off and apples really do not fall very far from the tree. Nevertheless, there are still some opportunities out

Use of mosses for landscape design in Hamptons NY

May 9, 2013 Experiencing NatureFeature ArticlesHamptonsLandscape DesignSustainability  No comments

This quote by Helen Keller seems to match the elegant sustainable solution of using moss as a ground cover.I was impressed recently by home seller's yard in Southampton that was completely covered with a velvety-soft moss ground cover. This seems to be one of the most appealing aspects of the property.

The owner explained the secret of how he maintains his moss-carpeted wooded terrain. He said that he allows leaves in the fall to remain on the ground all through the winter and then removes them all in the spring when moss growth kicks into high gear. The yard does not evoke the formal composition of a Japanese moss garden, but it was striking nonetheless with its meandering rock-lined pathways and statuary.

Helen Keller once wrote, "To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug." I agree with Keller that natural ground covers are

Japanese-bloodgood-maple.jpg AMYes, another good excuse to lower prices on our beautiful, Japanese red maples! Now, we not only have a vast assortment of perennials on sale, but also this tree variety, the Acer Palmatum - Bloodgood, now 25% off! This is one of the most popular and sought-after large-leaved, upright maples in the United States and Europe. One of the reasons it is so popular is because it offers rich burgundy-red color for such a long duration, from spring into late summer.

This photo displays a sample of this Japanese red maple in our nursery yard on Montauk Highway in Water Mill. This variety is recommended by the United States National Arboretum and has received awards: Mississippi Medallion Award Winner and the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Screen Shot 2013-05-01 at 10.29.07 AMWow, it's May already! And Mother's Day is coming up soon, Sunday May 12th. Are you ready? Instead of the usual cut flowers that will quickly dry up and fade away, why not give flowers that will symbolize the enduring love and life of your affectionate devotion?

Do give a card with something really special on it, but don't neglect to also buy some great, memorable flowers! From Bernhardt to the Beatles, perennial flowers offer some interesting history and great points of interest to talk about.

The Blue Variegated Iris is the first flower on the list. This variety hails from Europe and its relative was forever captured in Vincent van Gogh's famous painting "Iris". The Echinacea Big Sky Sundown grows large, bursting up to about a 4-foot height. And, as you may be aware, it can be

Hamptons Designer Housing Market Update

April 29, 2013 Landscape DesignNews  One comment

200px-Cuckoo_clock_by_Pascal_TarabayLast week, 27East reported how Hamptons Cottages & Gardens magazine hosted a panel discussion that featured discussions by a variety of professionals related to the real estate industry in the Hamptons and, with regard to creativity and real estate, the situation is a bit paradoxical. In one sense, it's a designer's market:

"Mr. Collé, who said that today's buyers are "less interested in cookie-cutter houses" and more passionate about custom-designed homes, said that he has been seeing more and more demand for "bigger and better" residences. That means more and more teardowns of existing older homes on ideally located properties, he reported."

And yet, in another sense, the population of creative artists and designers that helped to give the Hamptons a sense of mystique seems to be

Why are large, old trees disappearing globally?

April 25, 2013 HamptonsNewsSustainability  No comments

Childe-Hassam-Elms-East-HamptonThis beautiful image by painter Childe Hassam (1859 – 1935) immortalizes the famous and majestic elm-lined streets of East Hampton from an era gone by. According to global reports, however, this type of majestic imagery may literally become a thing of the past. There are increasing news stories with titles such as these: "Why are old trees disappearing?" "Why are the world's older trees disappearing?" "Trees Are Disappearing" "Mystery of disappearing trees in world's biggest urban forest" and so on.

These stories are presented with a mixture of scientific authority and a bit of mystery as well. When I searched for the scientific source of the opinion, this generally led to a report published December 7, 2012 in the journal Science, entitled Global Decline in Large Old Trees.

How Local Landscape Architecture Addresses US Health Crisis

April 22, 2013 HealthLandscape DesignNewsSustainability  No comments

NLAM is involvedIn case you weren't aware, April is National Landscape Architecture Month (NLAM) in the US. And this year, the focus is on health. It seems like a broad stretch for landscape architects to be focusing on such topics as childhood obesity, but, after all, this will ultimately reduce the need for high-strength jungle gyms and retrofitted swing sets. Actually, come to think of it, we did see a noticeably overweight young person on a swing set at a beach last summer and then the next day the swing was dangling down onto the ground, broken on one side. Later, someone retrofitted the elastic swing with some high-strength bolts. I bring this point up to emphasize how living patterns effect people in both cities and in more rural areas and how landscape planning applies to both conditions. The

New Beautifully Shaped Linden Hamptons

Penelope Hobhouse once wrote, “Gardens are the result of a collaboration between art and nature.” Penelope is a widely popular author and garden designer who sees landscape design as both the creation of space and the creation of art.

The above photos, from the top, include mature lindens that have been carefully sculpted, a Japanese maple that is artfully shaped and some mature magnolias that are already beginning to bloom. Consider adding some sculpted trees as accents or in order to frame out and create a truly unique space.
